The story behind the label
A real abbey. A living tradition.
On the banks of the River Dart in Devon stands Buckfast Abbey. A monastery was first founded here in 1018. The abbey you see today was rebuilt by the monks who returned to the site in the late nineteenth century.
In 1897, the nephew of a French monk brought a tonic wine recipe to Buckfast. It became the wine that would carry the abbey’s name far beyond Devon. Buckfast Tonic Wine is still produced there today.
